Online shopping & Brexit from January? What does it mean for us?
Online shopping & Brexit from January? What does it mean for us?
Long story short... let’s continue to Buy Irish, support Irish businesses & Irish jobs ... but here is info on how Brexit will affect our overseas online shopping from January.
I’ve been reading up about it lately, this is what I’ve learned. I don’t know everything & we have to see what happens in January, but for the moment this is what I found out;
So from Jan 1st 2021, we may face extra charges when purchasing from Great Britain websites & our EU consumer rights will no longer apply post Brexit.
If you purchase before 11pm on the 31st Dec & DISPATCHED before that date there will be no additional taxes & charges.
1️⃣ If your basket value is less than €22, there’s no additional Import Charges. *Please note this includes postage charges.*
2️⃣ If your basket is more than €22 there is VAT payable. (Total value of the goods including delivery charges, insurance & handling charges)
3️⃣ If your basket is more than €150, Customs Duty & Vat is payable (Total value of the goods excluding delivery charges, insurance & handling charges). Keep an eye on exchange rates good website is www.xe.com
If you need to pay customs you pay at the post office, online or An Post, to receive the parcel.
One question I’d like to find out is, if you purchase an item online & get it shipped to store, how does it work?
A good website to find out more information : https://www.ccpc.ie/consumers/shopping/brexit/
Also Parcel motel is now closed but can still use An Post AddressPal;
From An Post website;
* We have negotiated with 95% of retailers we deliver for in Great Britain to apply any charges when you purchase your goods online, so no action is required by you before delivery.
* For the remaining 5%, customs charges may apply and you will need to pay them before delivery. Personal gifts from GB with a value of €45 or more, may also carry a customs charge.
An Post will notify you if a parcel sent to you has incurred customs charges and you will need to pay.
Think now more than ever, it’s best to continue to #buyirish , #shoplocal & #shopirish to avoid these additional charges.
